TEXT AND REFLECTION

Eternity is not simply a longer duration

Separate beginninglessness, endless succession and dependence outside an assumed temporal sequence.

Text and context

In his discussion of Ibn al-Arabi’s Book of Eternity, Mohamed Haj Yousef distinguishes azal, without beginning, from abad, without end. He explains eternity through the denial of a temporal boundary rather than a very long extension. The linked article is the consulted interpretive source; no newly verified manuscript pagination is implied.

Three different mathematical questions

A sequence extending indefinitely into the past differs from a theory in which temporal order itself depends on something that is not one of its dated events. Both differ again from a sequence with a first member but no last member. Calling all three “eternal” conceals the distinction.

For SMM/DTT, this matters when a source is called prior to space or time. Logical or explanatory priority does not require an earlier clock reading. A reconstruction can specify a dependency between source dynamics and observable records without inventing a hidden calendar before the first observation. The next task is to show that the proposed source law actually supplies the structures attributed to it.

Questions for further reading

  • Does “without beginning” describe a sequence or deny that the source belongs to one?
  • Is the proposed priority temporal, logical, or causal?
  • Which definition prevents an undeclared external clock from entering the model?

Interpretive scope

Historical and philosophical reflection. The SMM/DTT connections are contemporary interpretations and research questions; they are not claims that the cited text proves a modern physical theory.
